Good food is important to me. Locally grown and cooked with love and a little finesse. Good food does not have to be fancy dishes covered in thyme smoke or created with tweezers on plates. You can go a long way with good ingredients and curiosity. Good food is not prepared according to a cookbook, but according to your heart. On the Kulla Peninsula (Kullahalvön) in northwestern Skåne, you’ll find one of Sweden’s most exciting areas for a food enthusiasts. Join Sweden’s new food mecca where the passion for good food can be found all around the rocky peninsula’s restaurants.
Keep in mind that many of the restaurants below are only open during spring/summer/early automn! Even though the summer is long and lovely in Kullabygden, it is always best to check the opening hours before you go there.
RANSVIK HAVSVERANDA – RANSVIK
In Kullaberg’s nature reserve, at the end of a narrow and winding road, lies the charming and immensely popular Ransvik sea veranda (Ransvik havsveranda). Settling down here by the sea for a lunch or coffee is a real treat for the soul. Order a smoked salmon from Mölle fiskrökeri or an Italian Stuffato – here you are tossed between dill-scented Swedish classics and Italian favourites. Flavors that go well with the salty sea air.
For those of you who “just want to have a coffee”, here you’ll find pastries that make you say “oh my” and think about whether you can order BOTH a roll cake topped with cream AND a “Sin in Mölle” – chocolate cake. For a lower-calorie dessert, one of Kullaberg’s best sea baths is also offered.
Drop-in applies here, so be sure to be there well in advance! Dogs are welcome outdoors.
HOLY SMOKE – BRÄCKE
The smoke lies over the horse paddocks already at 10 o’clock in the morning. Are we in Texas? Or maybe in a backyard in Tennessee? Here outside Brunnby, you will find Holy Smoke – one of Sweden’s absolute best BBQ experiences. Not only is smoked brisket served here, but also an atmosphere that takes you to a southern country bar. Sit down, order a full tray of today’s meat. Enjoy. It’s as simple as that. Vegetarian? Then unfortunately this is not the place for you.
This applies to drop-in – find a table first and then go and order the food. Dogs are welcome!
VILLA BRUNNBY – BRUNNBY
This summer’s newly opened star in Brunnby is the beautiful hotel Villa Brunnby with the restaurant Amber. Remember this place, because you sure want to visit. Again and again. The dining room serves a menu with ambitions and delivers not only impeccable and personal service but also a wonderful dining experience. Sitting on the terrace, I had to pinch my arm a few times when found myself thinking I was in Tuscany.
In the evening, it is recommended that you book a table in advance. Dogs are welcome on the outdoor terrace.
MÖLLE KRUKMAKERI – MÖLLE
How about a real Neapolitan pizza? Mölle pottery (Mölle krukmakeri) serves baked magic when the best ingredients bounce in the oven for 60 seconds at 480 ° c. My favorite pizza this summer has been the pizza Chilimaddafakka – a truffle pizza with chili, Marzano tomato, buffalo mozzarella, olives, arugula and parmesan. As soon as I think about it now, I get hungry… Being able to sit in the wonderful garden under apple trees and colored lights and listen to Cuban rhythms in the summer evening makes you almost hope that you have to wait a while for the pizza.
Book a table in advance, otherwise it can be tough to get a table! Dogs are welcome when you eat in the garden.
LA MAISON FRANCAISE – OUTSIDE HÖGANÄS
As the secret francophile that I am, I can only say Oh la la about this place. It is not often you come across confit de canard in Sweden and when the duck is also served so perfectly and just melts in your mouth – then I can not help but sing Oh la la . La maison francaise is a French farm bistro outside Höganäs with a farm shop and café. It serves four dishes that change almost every day. The only dish that has been on the menu every time I have been there, has been the duck.
You can not book a table here – just show up! Dogs are welcome on the outdoor terrace.
And you – before you go home, buy with you the farm’s home-made Persillade – it is indispensable in the kitchen!
GARAGE BAR – HÖGANÄS
Burgers and bikes. Garage bar in Höganäs serves not only one of Sweden’s best burgers, but a whole concept with junk food royal, party and rock’n’roll. The music is loud, the beer is frothy and it’s so unpretentious and American that you cannot do anything but just sit and enjoy. Of course, vanilla coke is on the menu. I told you it was American.
Here you need to book a table, especially during the weekends! Dogs are welcome both outside and inside.
HOTEL KULLABERG – MÖLLE
If you are looking for a nice place to hang out at sunset by the sea and watch people and surfers, then Hotell Kullaberg in Mölle is just the place. This is a classic bistro food, from Sweden’s (by far!) largest shrimp sandwich to satisfying moules frites. Here you can even get yourself an authentic Scanian egg cake. Maybe that even beats a moules frites?
Here you can book a table if you want, but it is often possible to run drop-in – even on sunny evenings. Dogs are welcome on the outdoor terrace.
RUSTHÅLLARGÅRDEN’S TERRACE – ARILD
Blue blue winds and the sea of Skälderviken. From Rusthållargården’s terrace, pizza is served “in Scanian” accompanied by jazz and wonderful views of the sea. How about a pizza with pickled chanterelle, thyme and truffle oil? Oh yes please! Rusthållargården in Arild is a real gem during sunny summer evenings. Well worth a visit even if you are just craving a drink at sunset.
Here you do not book a table for the pizza evenings on the terrace, but show up when it suits you! Dogs can sit on the outdoor terrace.
ARILD’S WINERY – ARILD
Arild’s winery has been our regular place this summer. Here on the southern slopes of Kullaberg, the wine thrives during the long summer and it is a joy to be able to settle down here with a locally produced glass of Solaris after a walk with the dog. The restaurant with its outdoor seating is both beautiful and pleasant, with classic and reasonably priced dishes suitable for the whole family. My favorite is “Rooster in wine” and the smoked salmon with ramson pesto. The Kulla Peninsula is usually called the Nordic Provence, which you will understand sitting here on a hot summer evening among vines and glamping tents.
Here you can book a table, but even though it is popular, we usually only run drop-in. Dogs can sit at the table on the outdoor terrace.
THE GARDEN AT SKÄRET
Last but certainly not least: I end with one of my favorites. “The garden” (Trädgården) at Skäret. Are you hungry for top-class oysters with a glass of champagne? Or maybe a spring vegetable pasta with chanterelles and truffles? Trädgården is a farm shop with a champagne bar that has all those little extras that add a golden edge to life. The perfectly marbled meat, the store-cooked crayfish or the home-produced vegetables. The garden is proof that good quality tastes better.
The garden is not a regular restaurant, but usually has light lunches and theme nights. A tip is to call in advance and check the menu and pre-book. Otherwise you can always eat oysters and champagne for lunch.
These were my restaurant favorites from the Kulla Peninsula! Did I miss any of your favorites? And you – soon there will be a post about cafes on the Kulla Peninsula. Stay tuned 🙂
